| PreS—Night in the barnyard gives way to the crowing rooster. Then: "Banty hen feels…broody." She lays her eggs, waits, they hatch, run around getting into trouble, and finally night falls, leaving them safe with their mother. The story is minimal, but the pleasing sound effects and adventurous chicks testing their independence will engage young listeners. The time structure is uneven, beginning with morning and finishing at night, while leaving the time in between elastic: sometimes there are moments between pages, other times days or weeks, which may confuse the intended audience. A lovely endnote explains the factual information behind the text. Joosse is trying to impart it in an entertaining, narrative fashion, but she is only partially successful. The illustrations, on the other hand, are inspired. Using collage and colored pencil, Chrustowski imbues the images with color, life, personality, and movement. The chicks, who vary in color from black to brown to yellow, with some bicolored, look ready to jump off the page. The artist's torn-paper technique gives them a fuzzy look, and the collage provides depth and texture. The barnyard teems with life, including everything from grasshoppers to snakes to raccoons. | Reviewed by Cayden Aures (age 5 ) and Mom for Reader Views (04/10) "Higgledy-Piggledy Chicks" is the story of a Mama hen that has seven brand new chicks. They are very curious little things and have many near misses with trouble. Cayden: "The hen laid seven eggs. I liked when they started to crack open and hatch. Some of the chicks were different colors. There were yellow ones, and brown ones, and black ones. They could have gotten in lots of trouble if their mom didn't keep protecting them. They saw a cat and a snake and some other things. I liked the part at the end that showed pictures of real baby chicks and liked that it told about how they grow inside their eggs." Parent's comments: "Higgledy-Piggledy Chicks" is a fun springtime book! We loved seeing what kind of trouble the chicks were going to get into next. The chicks often reminded me of my own children in that respect! The "How Little Chicks Grow" and "A Hobby Farmer with Art Supplies" sections at the end of the book were very interesting and supplemented the story nicely. | |
